- I believe that the degausing procedure was designed to cause magnetic
- mines that were already attached to the ship to drop off before the
- ship entered the harbor. San Diego harbor had a degausing net at the
- entrance. During WWII the net was energized as ship came in so that no
- magnetic mines would be carried into the harbor. Whether it worked or
- no, I don't know.
