  46. I believe that the degausing procedure was designed to cause magnetic
  47. mines that were already attached to the ship to drop off before the
  48. ship entered the harbor. San Diego harbor had a degausing net at the
  49. entrance. During WWII the net was energized as ship came in so that no
  50. magnetic mines would be carried into the harbor. Whether it worked or
  51. no, I don't know.
